There is no one, single known cause of eczema. In fact, there are a number of different factors that can trigger off eczema in an individual. Some of these factors include:

  • Allergies
  • Outside irritants
  • Infection
  • Weakened immune system
  • Stress or anxiety

All of the above can be contributory factors to eczema. Ironically, stress, anxiety and allergies will also work against the immune system so it is suffice to say that those with a weakened immune system are more likely to be affected by eczema. This includes those who suffer from illnesses that weaken the immune system, those getting over colds and infection, babies and older people.

Eczema has a variety of different names but for the most part it appears as a rash that can cause severe itching on the body. It can appear anywhere on the body. In older people, it tends to appear on the lower legs and arms. Baby eczema will appear on the face of a baby. Some people get it on their hands or scalp. Anywhere there is skin, you can get eczema.

There are various ways to treat eczema. No matter what the cause of eczema, you should try not to scratch the skin as this can lead to an infection that can include further complications. You should use a topical ointment to relieve the itch that often, but not always, accompanies this condition.

There are some medications that when taken will make your skin photo sensitive to the sun. In such cases, you can get eczema from photo toxicity. In these cases, the eczema will be in areas on your skin that are exposed to the sun.

It is commonly thought that the cause of eczema is excessively dry skin. This is why those who suffer from eczema will use creams and ointments to make their skin smoother and more hydrated. It is also a good idea to drink a lot of water when you have eczema as this is a way to naturally hydrate the skin from the outside.

Most doctors, when presented with eczema, will look for the underlying cause of eczema within each patient. They will get them to examine what they are using for washing as well as laundry detergent. If they have just changed detergents or soaps, this can be a cause of eczema as it can be triggered by chemical irritants often found in soaps and detergents.

If a person is under a lot of stress or anxiety, it can be a cause of eczema. The treatment in this type of case would be to eliminate the source of the stress or anxiety.

While there is no single cause of eczema, there are a lot of different ways to treat the disease. Eating a healthy diet, exercising and keeping your skin clean and hydrated are some of the ways to help your eczema naturally.
